Sedation Dentistry Puts Pain To Sleep

For as long as dentistry has been practiced people have experienced fear based on pain associated with the experience. Today’s painless dentistry is putting an end to the cause of many patients’ fears.

A majority of dentists are offering oral medications and/or inhalation agents or even intravenous sedation for sedation dentistry. Sedation dentistry is pain maintenance that is geared towards clients who are fearful, highly anxious or who have had a traumatic dental experience. The following are some of the pain maintenance options that are available for sedation dentistry.

* Local Anesthesia: The most frequently used type of anesthesia. The dentist will first numb the area with a gel and then administer an injection to numb the general area that the dentist will be working on. The numbing effects may last from five minutes to three hours after treatment.

* Inhalation Anesthesia: Most commonly used is Nitrous Oxide or "laughing gas.” Nitrous Oxide is a sedative gas that is inhaled when the dentist places a rubber mask over the patient's nose so that the patient breathes it directly in. Most patients initially experience a feeling of lightheadedness and then gradually feeling of happiness and elation. It has a rapid onset with no lingering effects.

* Oral Conscious Sedation: The dentist will administer the patient a pill before treatment. The patient becomes sleepy and develops a diminished awareness of sounds and smells. The effects can last for up to four hours.

* Intravenous Sedation: Also known as IV or "conscious sedation." Patients think they are asleep and will have no memory of the procedure although they can respond to the dentist if necessary. It is administered by a specialist who is stays with the dentist during the procedure.

* Intramuscular Sedation: The dentist will inject the patient with a sedative drug into the muscle of the upper arm or the thigh, sedation occurs in approximately 2 to 30 minutes depending on the medication used.

* General Anesthesia: It may be a combination of injected or inhaled sedation. Patients are fully “asleep” during the treatment. Although the effects may last for hours, patients return home 2 to 4 hours after treatment.

Sedation dentistry varies from patient to patient and each ones circumstance. Sedation dentistry also depends on what the dentist and the patients comfort level. The dentist will discuss what is appropriate with his patient what action is best.
